Struggling with TMD, TMJ or jaw pain issues in Calgary?

TMJ  is the abbreviation often used for the TemporoMandibular Joint, which is the joint that connects the skull and the jaw bone.

This is a deceptively complex joint, as it allows the jaw to open and close, but also move forward and back. Problems with this joint can result in pain in the jaw, cheek, ear and temple.

The name given to this is TemporoMandibular Dysfunction, but it's often misdiagnosed as dental pain or migraines, meaning that sufferers can find themselves having unnecessary dental work or medication that doesn't resolve the issue.

I'm Dennis from KneadRelief, and I help people with TMJ pain and TMD in Calgary using specialist manual therapy techniques.

TMJ (TemporoMandibular Joint) Help in Calgary

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) disorders present a unique, often misunderstood challenge in the realm of physical discomfort.

It starts innocuously, perhaps as a click or a minor ache in the jaw. Gradually, it can escalate, affecting not only the jaw but manifesting in symptoms like tinnitus, headaches, and even impacting overall quality of life. Due to the fact that pain will manifest in the jaw, sufferers can end up having extensive dental work to try and resolve the problem, only to find that it's not related to their teeth, leaving them uncertain what else to do to resolve their pain.

TMJ issues can also go hand in hand with trigeminal nerve dysfunction, which can cause immense pain to the face and jaw.

Decoding TMJ: More Than Just Jaw Pain

TMJ disorders are conditions that affect the temporomandibular joint – the hinge connecting your jaw to your skull. This complex system of muscles, ligaments, and bones can cause a range of symptoms, including migraines, jaw pain, tinnitus, ear pain and migraines when not functioning properly.

Many clinicians forget that with TMJ, it's not just about pain in the jaw; it can lead to difficulty in chewing, locking of the jaw, and even radiating pain in the face.

Starting Points: Home Strategies for TMJ Relief

Many people initially try to deal with their TMJ issues with home remedies.

This is understandable - the condition is often poorly understood and sufferers are sometimes concerned that treatment will be costly and extensive (although RAPID NeuroFascial Reset, my primary treatment technique for TMJ, this is rarely the case).

While TMJ disorder symptoms vary from person to person, there are some universal strategies that can offer initial relief at home.

Gentle jaw exercises can help increase jaw mobility and relieve discomfort. Like many exercises, they should be performed carefully in order to avoid exacerbating the symptoms.

Using heat on the joint can help manage the pain and discomfort. Some people suffering with TMD will use ice or cold packs to reduce swelling; while icing is often unhelpful for soft tissue injuries, it can be helpful for TMD issues. If cold therapy is used, it's important not to use it for too long to avoid causing any long lasting tissue damage.

Many sufferers will alter their eating habits, choosing soft foods that don't require much chewing, and avoid actions like yawning or singing in order to try and reduce strain on the TMJ. While this can be helpful in the short term, it is not a practical long term solution.

Reducing stress can also help reduce issues around the TMJ; one cause of TMD can be teeth grinding or jaw clenching, both of which are related to stress and anxiety.

Beyond Home Remedies: A Tailored Approach to TMJ Relief

My transition from a technical field to therapeutic care has endowed me with a unique perspective on pain management. Just like with computer problems, trying to fix it at home is always worth trying, but sometimes the services of a professional are required if you want your system to work properly!

So while home strategies are valuable, but may not be enough for all sufferers. In my practice, KneadRelief, in Calgary, I offer a unique approach to TMJ disorders. I employ a blend of advanced massage techniques, focusing particularly on the facial and neck muscles, along with RAPID NeuroFascial Reset to address the deeper causes of TMJ disorders.

The aim is to not only alleviate the symptoms but to target the root of the problem for long-lasting relief.
