Living in Calgary and struggling with knee pain?

Did you know that anywhere between 15 to 20% of adults are struggling with knee pain at any one time? And that half a million young people in Canada injure their knees due to playing sports?

The
numbers are incredible - yet many people struggle on with knee pain, unaware of the options for help outside of medication and surgery.

I'm Dennis from KneadRelief, and as a keen ice hockey player, I understand the frustration and discomfort that comes with knee pain.

And as a highly qualified massage therapist and RAPID NeuroFascial Reset Specialist, I know how to treat knee pain.

Navigating Knee Pain: A Comprehensive Approach to Relief and Recovery

Knee pain isn't just a problem for older people - despite it's portrayal as being a condition that only affects older and more overweight people.

Knee pain is a common ailment across all ages and sections of society: male and female, young and old, slim or obese. Although modern science points is pointing to knee pain as being a complex condition more related to injuries or inflammation than weight, standard medical practice still tends to be advice to lose weight, have steroid injections (often no better than a placebo) or even knee replacement surgery.

Understanding knee pain: more than just aches and stiffness

The science around knee pain is constantly evolving, but it points to knee pain being far more complex than "wear and tear" or "being overweight". Regardless, the knee is a complex joint and as such, pain can arise from any of its structures, including cartilage, ligaments, muscles and tendons. Symptoms of knee pain can range from a dull ache to stiffness to swelling and pain that stops sufferers from carrying out daily activities or sports.

Causes of knee pain can come from simple injuries like a fall (the knee is quite a vulnerable joint) or a sports injury (the knee is especially vulnerable to side impacts or high level tackles as seen in ball sports). Science and studies suggest that lack of movement can exacerbate knee pain: a biological version of "use it or lose it". While excess weight may not be the cause of knee pain, we do know that obesity can increase inflammation throughout the body, and inflammation is linked to knee pain. Finally, chronic conditions such as arthritis can also be behind knee pain.

Initial steps: home remedies for knee pain

With knee pain being so common, many people look to treat initial knee pain -whether from injury or a chronic condition - at home.

Rest and elevation of the affected leg is a common treatment option. This can reduce swelling and pain, but the reduction is only temporary. It also requires the sufferer to stop their regular activities.

At the other end of the activity scale, low impact activities like swimming or cycling can help strengthen the muscles around the knee, which improves flexibility and helps support the joint. Despite the common belief that running is "bad" for the knees, the evidence suggests this is only true for people who run extreme distances.

Like many other injuries, applying heat or ice is common. Heat will often help relax the muscles and feel comforting, whereas ice can act as an anaesthetic and reduce swelling; however depending on the cause of the injury, reducing swelling may slow healing, so it should be used with caution.

Pain killers - both prescribed and over the counter - are common for knee pain. These can offer temporary relief, but long term use needs to be carefully discussed with medical professionals due to side effects.

Some people choose to look at footwear, opting for supportive shoes to help soften any impact through the knee joint when walking. While these can feel comfortable, they can be expensive and lessen the mobility of the ankle which can cause further issues.

Compression techniques are also popular. This can range from compression bandages that offer support but can be restrictive through to flexible sports taping techniques that offer support while still allowing ease of movement.

Home remedies can be effective, but they are often just temporary.
