Are you in Calgary and struggling with back pain that just won't let up?

I'm Dennis from KneadRelief, and I understand the frustration and discomfort that comes with persistent back pain.

It's a widespread issue - so many in our city and beyond are trying to navigate their days with this unwelcome companion.

In Canada, four out of five of us will have at least one episode of significant back pain, most commonly between the ages of thirty and fifty.

Back Pain in Calgary: A Widespread Challenge

a woman with back pain in Calgary, Alberta, sits on the floor.

Back pain often creeps into our lives subtly, initially appearing as mild discomfort but potentially growing into a debilitating condition.

More and more of my clients are being labelled as having "non-specific low back pain" or "chronic non-specific low back pain" (often shortened to NSLBP or CNSLBP).

Non-Specific Low Back Pain simply means back pain that doesn't have a known pathological reason that doctors can point to on a scan. But while it's a useful term for the medical community, for those struggling with the pain, it can often feel like an unsatisfactory explanation, and like they have been abandoned with a diagnosis that goes nowhere.

I believe that this rise in NSLBP and CNSLBP shows a deeper need for a personalised, tailored pain management solution.

What to do if you are struggling with back pain?

If you are struggling with back pain, there are some simple steps you can take to try and relieve the pain.

Although "bad posture" doesn't cause back pain by itself, staying in the same position (whether "good" or "bad" posture-wise) for a long period of time is unhelpful with back pain. Whether you are a desk jockey or working in a very physical role, make sure to move and change position regularly to reduce both existing back pain issues and help prevent issues occurring in the first place

An occasional stretch  won't cure back pain alone but keeping moving is really important. Regular focused stretching routines - or mobility focused exercises like yoga or pilates - can be very powerful in the fight against back pain and mobility issues. When embarking on a new exercise regime, make sure to seek professional advice and start slowly rather than hurling yourself into advanced level moves too early!

Heat therapy can be wonderful for back pain; although icing is traditionally used for pain relief, science shows us that heat is much more soothing and preferable in the vast majority of cases. At KneadRelief I will often recommend microwavable heat pads, carefully positioned, lightly filled hot water bottles, directed shower jets or even a nice warm bath (making sure that you're able to get in and out easily).

Movement matters; if you're struggling with back pain, it can feel like staying safe and comfortable on the sofa or even in bed is the best option because then it doesn't hurt. However, it's actually really important to keep moving as much as possible. Moving means that you're still upright and using the muscles that might otherwise become even more sore and stiff, as well as helping encourage blood flow and even lifting mood! Mild discomfort is acceptable, even if it's not particularly enjoyable!

Having back pain can be very stressful and depressing, especially if it's affecting your work and home life, but managing stress and mood is linked to improvement with back pain. It turns out that our minds affect our bodies more than we'd like to sometimes acknowledge, and you might have found yourself that your aches and pains feel worse when you're feeling stressed, anxious or low. Allow yourself to delegate tasks and ask for help if you can. or reach out to friends and family and share how you're feeling.

Simple Home Strategies and the Need for Professional Intervention
